{"id":17,"date":"2015-02-08T23:40:49","date_gmt":"2015-02-08T23:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonogyresearch.com\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2022-02-28T12:21:48","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T12:21:48","slug":"hifi","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sonogyresearch.com\/?page_id=17","title":{"rendered":"Sonogy Legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you find this page to be out of context in a site dedicated to next generation telecom technology, well, it is.\u00a0 For a significant period through the 1980s and 1990s, Sonogy was at the forefront of engineering outstanding solid-state audio electronics.\u00a0 Our focus was to do something which, at the time, seemed impossible: to marry the\u00a0 power, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of solid-state electronics with the natural warmness and harmonic &#8220;rightness&#8221; exhibited by the finest tube amplifiers, old and new.<\/p>\n<p>The two interlocking rings of the Sonogy logo represented the union of these two domains &#8211; and our ambition to make the best of both worlds.\u00a0 In fact, the name Sonogy derives from &#8220;Son&#8221; (sound) and &#8220;ogy&#8221; (to study) or &#8220;The Study of Sound&#8221;.\u00a0 Unlike many contemporary firms, we eschewed mysticism and magic, and focused on the known, if ignored engineering compromises being made by most mainstream designers at the time. We also took the uncommon position that empirical data (music) was more important than theory; and that if measurements didn&#8217;t correlate with perception, <em>maybe we didn&#8217;t know what to measure!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The results spoke, or maybe sang, for themselves. The Cantata power amplifier was a critical success from the first review, and the subsequent &#8220;Black Knight&#8221; (a name i never much liked, much preferring &#8220;Crescendo&#8221;) raised the bar substantially, as did its conceptual twins, the Concerto balanced preamplifier and Concept 60 60-watt [mostly] class A amplifier.\u00a0 You can still read old, and even some new, reviews that marvel at the natural timbres and sound-stage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41\" class='wp-caption aligncenter' style='width:599px;'><a href=\"https:\/\/sonogyresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Double-page-Spread-L.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41\" src=\"https:\/\/sonogyresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Double-page-Spread-L-1024x728.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonogyresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Double-page-Spread-L-1024x728.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sonogyresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Double-page-Spread-L-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><p class='wp-caption-text'><em>Black Knight Power Amplifier, 1995<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>That&#8217;s all history now.
